Howard Bauchner, MD, is the 16th Editor-in-Chief of JAMA and The JAMA Network.  He was appointed EIC in July 2011. Previously he was a Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, where he was the Director of the Division of General Pediatrics and Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs. In 2015 he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, formerly the Institute of Medicine.

At JAMA Howard has focused on influencing clinical care and policy, by improving content, including original research, opinion, and clinical reviews. New article types have been added and the use of video, audio, and social media greatly increased. The JAMA Network was launched in early 2012, a new website debuted in May 2012 and again in October 2016. In January 2013 all of the Archives Journals were renamed, in March 2013 an HTML app was launched, and in July 2013 the first major print redesign of JAMA and The JAMA Network Journals came to fruition. Electronic amalgamation was completed in January 2014 – JAMA now touches over 1.2M physicians each week. In 2015 JAMA had 25M downloads ~ 500,000 per week. It is estimated that in 2016, JAMA will have over 30M downloads. Two new journals have joined TJN, JAMA Oncology in 2015 and JAMA Cardiology in 2016.  In January 2016, JAMA and TJN began to publish the US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendations along with the evidence reviews that support the Task Force recommendations.
